WHAT IS AN ANIMAL SHELTER?
An animal shelter is a building for the housing of unwanted animals. We, the SPCA Penang, maintain a shelter with 30 kennels and a cattery.
Most animals turned in are cats and dogs. Dropping off your unwanted animal to a shelter is a very stressful experience for it. It will be very distressed when it is initially dropped off. We try to reassure these animals, care for them, and try desperately to rehome them.
Shelters are staffed by caring attendants who will feed and care for your pet until a new prospective owner is found. Sadly, the reality of the situation is that there are far too many animals to be rehomed. For this reason many animals must be humanely euthanized. There is no such thing as a No Kill Shelter.
Any shelter that accepts all animals despite the condition has to euthanize those animals that are not adoptable. This is of no fault of the shelter, but of the previous owner.
If you surrender an animal to the SPCA, you do so with the full knowledge and understanding that your animal may have to be euthanized.
We will home the animal as long as the owner is prepared to pay a standard daily boarding fee till a home is found. To cover the cost of boarding, euthanasia and disposal, a standard fee will be charged to cover the costs should a home not be found.
If all prospective owners would make at least, a ten-year commitment for ownership before becoming a pet owner, and would neuter their pets, the need for animal shelter would be greatly reduced.
The SPCA Penang owes its existence to the dedicated volunteers and generous donors who help us save and improve the lives of animal. Will you contribute so that we can continue to work towards the elimination of animal cruelty and the reduction of unwanted animals in Penang?
Stray Animals Brought In
The SPCA expects a contribution whenever you bring a stray animal in. This will help to provide for whatever attention the stray animal may need. Any contribution is appreciated and gratefully accepted. We receive no State or Government grants and depend totally on your generosity to carry on our work.
